In 2018 serious, or Part I, crime in Greenbelt decreased 9 percent, down from 920 reported incidents to 840. Serious crimes include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft.
Violent Crime
Violent crimes of murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault involve the element of personal confrontation between the perpetrator and the victim; consequently, they are considered more serious crimes than property crimes because of their very nature. The total number of violent crime was 117 incidents, which comprised 14 percent of all crime. This is a decrease of 2 percent from the previous year. The majority of violent crime, 73 percent (85 incidents), occurred in Greenbelt West, 16 percent (19 incidents) in Greenbelt East, and 11 percent (13 incidents) in Historic Greenbelt.
Property Crime
Property crimes comprise the majority of crime with 723 incidents, over six times greater than the number of violent crimes. As a group, property crimes accounted for 86 percent of the total Greenbelt crime in 2018. The majority of property crimes, 55 percent (401), occurred in Greenbelt West, 31 percent (226) in Greenbelt East, and the remaining 13 percent (96) in Historic Greenbelt.
