On March 21, the Prince George’s County Council unanimously swore in the inaugural commissioners for the newly formed County Commission on Common Ownership Communities. The formation of this new commission is unique. There is only one other such commission in the nation, in Montgomery County.
The commission was created by the passage of legislation in 2015 by the county council to assist governing bodies, owners and members of homeowner associations, residential condominiums and cooperative housing corporations with education, training and alternative dispute resolution procedures in matters related to common ownership communities. These types of communities comprise the majority of new residential construction in Prince George’s County and it is estimated that approximately 33 percent of all residents within the county live in these types of communities.
