The News Review’s pay scale, though hardly overgenerous at any time in its history, offered the 1950’s volunteer (as one veteran of the times noted) enough money to pay a babysitter and buy a pack of cigarettes. A great deal for a mom with demanding toddlers and a smoking habit. In comparison to 1958, however, the number of members on the masthead today has quadrupled. Why the high level of interest? Could it be because nothing succeeds like success or is it simply because fewer of us smoke?
2017 Accomplishments
This year the paper has been on a roll. It commissioned a movie – Defending Utopia: The News Review at 80 – which had its premiere presentation at the Old Greenbelt Theatre in November. Attendees were delighted. Smiling moviegoers exclaimed how warm the experience had felt, how it made them feel part of something valuable and rare. It was a celebration of city spirit and a special camaraderie. The movie itself will become part of the town’s history and its very existence makes a statement about the community’s health and vitality. A second showing and discussion by the filmmaker, Greenbelter Susan Gervasi, is scheduled at OGT on January 14 in the afternoon. Details coming soon to a newspaper near you.
