Imagine boxes full of children’s books arriving daily at your front door. This dream was a reality for Pam Hamlin during the past year, as she served on the Newbery Award Committee. Hamlin works as the family literacy specialist at the administrative offices of the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS).
The Newbery Medal, named after an early English publisher of children’s literature, is given to “the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children” up to and including the age of 14, published by an American author. The award is decided by a committee of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), which is part of the American Library Association (ALA). As a specialist in early childhood education,
Hamlin was appointed to the committee by the ALSC president.
