The January government shutdown was not all bad. Two furloughed professional archivists employed at the National Archives II in College Park volunteered with the Greenbelt Museum and processed a backlog of items that were incorporated into the museum’s archives. The items included documents, letters, maps, newspaper clippings, brochures, etc. This information was provided to the Greenbelt City Council at its April 3 worksession to consider City Manager Nicole Ard’s proposed Fiscal Year 2020 budget. Museum Director Megan Searing Young mentioned the archivists’ participation as part of a long list of activities and accomplishments.
Young also told the council that the Friends of the Greenbelt Museum (FOGM) is now circulating a Request for Proposals from architecture/engineering firms to create drawings based on the final conceptual plans for incorporating the recently-acquired neighboring home, 10-A Crescent, into the museum. After input from council, these plans will be used by a contractor to transform the space into an education and visitor center to support the museum’s programs and activities.
