Greenbelt City Councilmember Silke Pope and the City of Greenbelt recently hosted the Small Cities Council of the National League of Cities (NLC). The Small Cities Council is comprised of elected officials from communities across the country with a population of less than 50,000. Pope is the 2016 Chair of the Small Cities Council and as such hosted the annual summer meeting of the group. The meeting was held at the Greenbelt Hilton Garden Inn from July 13 through 16. The group enjoyed a viewing of the movie The City, along with a description of Greenbelt’s history and tour of the Museum led by Museum Curator Megan Searing-Young. Caitlin McGrath, executive director of the Friends of the Greenbelt Theatre, was also present and explained the Friends role in operating the theater. On Thursday, the group was greeted by Mayor Emmett Jordan and Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III. This was followed by presentations on Police Department accreditation led by Greenbelt’s Accreditation Manager Jim Parker and former Greenbelt CaptainCarl Schinner, now police chief in La Plata, Md.
