Monday night’s city council meeting started with the approval of lots of sets of minutes for executive sessions dealing with personnel matters. It peaked with the approval of a contract to hire a new city manager, and it ended with lots of hugs and cupcakes for the retiring city manager. Ever since Michael McLaughlin’s announcement last spring that he intended to retire at the end of 2016, he and the city council have been engaged in efforts to identify and hire the next city manager. McLaughlin has served for more than 20 years as city manager and 37 years in total for the city. At the Monday meeting that goal was finally achieved, with the unanimous approval of a contract to appoint Nicole C. Ard to the position. Ard anticipates being onboard in Greenbelt on Tuesday, January 17. She has most recently served as city manager for the City of Sandusky, Ohio. For more about this story, click here.
