On Monday, May 6, Alyssa Heintzelman was awarded a $10,000 prize by the David Craig Memorial Scholarship Fund (DCMSF). Every year one Eleanor Roosevelt High School (ERHS) graduate is chosen by DCMSF, a Greenbelt nonprofit, to receive an award. At the annual senior awards ceremony, DCMSF President Douglas Mangum, an alumnus from the class of 1979, announced Heintzelman as the winner for 2019. Mangum has been making the trek back to his alma mater to present this award since 2004.
The DCMSF honors and celebrates the class of 1979 and David Craig who died five years after graduating from ERHS. Since its inception in 1986, the intent of the scholarship is to bring good out of what was a tragic event. As Mangum observed, “Memorializing someone of such high esteem is a spiritual commitment and has made a lasting impression in Greenbelt. It has been truly a blessing to me, and the entire Craig family to honor well-rounded, selfless individuals. The students who apply are truly spectacular and amazing young people …”
