Many organizations send out last-ditch pleas for money at the end of the year. But this newspaper doesn’t bludgeon readers for their hard-earned cash – instead it asks for their time. We want your help, your expertise and your commitment. (Though we’ll take your money too, if you insist.)
Key Needs
We had several retirements in 2021, perhaps accelerated by Covid but also in the natural course of things. We were particularly hard hit on our advertising desk where we interact with advertisers in pricing, recording and receiving ads and payments. Our accounting team, the other essential key to our financial health, is also shorthanded. We need an accountant to assist in preparing financial statements and bookkeeping help for week-to-week recordkeeping. We need people with some comfort and familiarity with computers, particularly with spreadsheets or with QuickBooks, our accounting system.
Commitment
If you want to do a power of good for this community with a weekly commitment of time between two and six hours, we’d love to hear from you. There is a small dividend payment available to members for each shift they work (we are a worker cooperative) though some members decline to take it. A shift is approximately two to three hours with some members working one, some several, as they choose.
The newspaper is currently working in person in its office in the Community Center, with limits on the number of staff in the room; masks are required and there is no access to the public. The ad desk has specific office hours to take care of the phones but there is some flexibility in when and where other aspects of the tasks may be tackled. Some roles can be done all or partially from home.
