The Fiscal Year 2025 budget for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) does not include the proposed cuts of some Metrobus routes, including the G12 route between the Greenbelt and New Carrollton Metro stations. Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia all increased their contributions to Metro and WMATA was able to find cost-saving efficiencies that allow bus and rail service to be maintained at current levels. However, there will be a 12.5 percent increase in fares, starting July 1, 2024, with bus fares and base rail fares increasing to $2.25. The maximum rail fare will increase from $6 to $6.75.
WMATA does plan to begin implementation of their Better Bus Network program (wmata.com/initiatives/plans/Better-Bus) in FY25. This likely will result in the renaming of bus routes and some schedule adjustments, including to the bus routes that serve Greenbelt. See betterbus.wmata.com. Stay tuned.
