On Saturday, January 2, at approximately 10 p.m., a Greenbelt police officer sustained serious injuries as a result of being struck by a vehicle while on foot assisting the U.S. Park Police with a traffic accident on Edmonston Road north of Cherrywood Lane. The officer was transported by helicopter to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for treatment and was listed in critical condition. The striking vehicle remained at the scene.
The officer has been identified as Master Patrol Officer Chris Peters, a 22-year veteran of the Greenbelt Police Department. The police department is issuing bulletins to update the community but at the time of writing, she remained in critical condition. Greenbelt Police continue to investigate the accident.
The Greenbelt branch of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has created a GoFundMe page to assist her and her family. Information on this fundraising effort and links to contribute can be found via the FOP website, facebook.com/GreenbeltFOP.
As of the morning of Wednesday, January 6, over 200 contributions had been made to the site and the total raised was approaching $18,000. Contributions were flowing in at the rate of several per hour.
