For Calista Ausema, it was a chance to feed her interest in Russia and Eastern Europe. For Jason Delp, it was an opportunity to learn more about his wife’s homeland. And for Sandra Flowe, it was a moment to pick up some items to homeschool her daughter.
Each was at the Greenbelt Elementary School Book Sale on Sunday, September 1, poring over boxes that seemed to beckon them personally.
Ausema was actually making sure she hadn’t missed anything on Saturday, when she snagged a copy of Crime and Punishment, the 1866 Russian novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, along with a 1991 volume on travel in the former Soviet Union.
“I’ve basically been coming my whole life,” said the Greenbelt resident. “It’s definitely gotten bigger, but in a lot of ways, it’s remarkably the same – lots of big boxes of books.”
Delp scored an uncorrected proof of Modern Japanese Diaries, in which various Japanese individuals describe their travels to China, Europe and the United States between 1860 and 1920.
