Amelia Moore started martial arts and karate when she was seven years old, competing in local tournaments in combat forms called sparring and kata. Now at 27 she has won her first National Golden Gloves championship at the women’s 141-pound weight class.
Moore is a local who lives in Historic Greenbelt. She experienced boxing for the first time at age 17 when she took a one-session women’s self-defense class with her mother. The class instructor noticed her potential after the class, and suddenly Moore found a new interest.
“The instructor spoke to us after the class about what he saw in me and told me about a female pro he had trained, but we couldn’t afford him,” said Moore.
Moore said the instructor spiked her interest and she wanted to learn and find a gym. Her intentions at the time focused on attending the Naval Academy, but there was no opportunity for females in boxing at the Academy. Moore then began her search and built up her own boxing foundation to gain support and sponsors. Her first bout ever came on February 5, 2011.
