Early last month, the Greenbelt Youth Advisory Committee traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate as youth delegates in the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Congressional City Conference. This annual event hosts city councils from around the country as they share issues relevant to their localities and their consequent solutions, in the hopes that they can return to their cities with a wealth of information that can be used to better serve their communities. As the city councils convene, a similar conference is held between the youth councils from those cities. This year, the threeday event was attended by youth councils from 21 different states. The topics discussed included ways to get funding for council endeavors, approaches for getting more young people involved in municipal politics and ideas for new initiatives in the youth delegates’ respective cities.
