The Annual Greenbelt Labor Day Festival is fast approaching. The Festival begins on Friday, August 30, and continues through Monday, September 2. The Festival is a unique community celebration, one of the largest events of its kind in the State of Maryland. Many former Greenbelters return for this special weekend to attend reunions with family and friends.
The Festival is organized and conducted by an independent volunteer group, the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival Committee. Linda Ivy continues as the longtime president of the Festival’s board of directors. The committee is comprised of generous and dedicated citizens who have worked long hours over the past year to ensure that we all have a wonderful time.
An opening ceremony and concert will be held on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. with introductions of dignitaries and presentation of the Outstanding Citizen Award, which honors citizens who make Greenbelt great. The carnival midway opens at 6 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. with many fun and exciting rides, games and delicious food offerings.
Saturday’s scheduled special events include a Children’s Pet Show on the Community Center lawn from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and from 1 to 6 p.m. festival attendees can take in the art and photo exhibits in the Community Center. Roller skating in the Youth Center gym, face painting and music performances on the stage are just a small sample of the many fun and exciting activities scheduled.
Sunday brings a craft fair to the Community Center from noon to 8 p.m. and a Retro Town Fair at the Greenbelt Museum at 10-B Crescent Road.
The Labor Day parade, Alight Dance Theater performance and a youth scavenger hunt are just a few of the highlights scheduled for Monday.
Throughout the entire weekend various community organizations will hold their annual fundraisers, so be sure to visit the Greenbelt Elementary School’s used book sale, Greenbelt Baptist Church bead necklace and bracelet sale and Greenbelt Nursery School’s T-shirts, magnet sale and easel painting.
