Greenbelt Access Television (GATe) announced its second annual Rose Awards on March 20 during the television station’s annual meeting. The contest showcases videos created by Greenbelt community video producers.
Sally Davies took first place this year for her short painting-and-time-lapse film From Georgia to Greenbelt. Second place was awarded to Tanya Nordberg and Ian Blackwell Rogers for their rendition of ’Twas The Night Before Yuletide, a poem by CC Williford, performed by Rogers and edited by Nordberg. Mike McMullin took third for the filming of La Unica, a musical group performance at the New Deal Café.
Judges – who were neither GATe staff members nor GATe board members – were chosen at random from the community. These judges weighed entries based on criteria including originality, creativity, relevance for and connection to Greenbelt, production value and technical quality (sound, editing, music and lighting).
First place took home a $200 prize, second and third took home $100 and $50, respectively. The winners also received recognition and a certificate at the annual membership meeting.
GATe is now accepting submissions for the 2022 Rose Award Contest. They are looking for Greenbelt-centered, self-produced videos that can be aired on the cable channel and spread through their social media channels. Individuals who live in Greenbelt, Berwyn Heights, College Park and New Carrollton are eligible to enter. Contestants cannot be employed by GATe or a Rose Award Contest judge.
