Published continuously since the New Deal City of Greenbelt was founded in 1937, the News Review is delivered free to most Greenbelt residents. In 1970 we won a landmark First Amendment case in the Supreme Court.

Letters to the Editor

When submitting a letter, include phone, address and full name for validation  Letters must be submitted by 6 p.m. Monday for Thursday’s newspaper. You may request anonymity.

  • Letters are limited to no more than approximately 300 words and published only at the editorial board’s discretion.  Submitting a letter does not mean it will be published and we are not required to justify our decisions to reject.  Letters should be factual, polite and directly related to Greenbelt itself or an issue that affects it.
  • We do not publish letters relating to commercial disputes with stores or other such bodies.
  • If you write a letter to another body, e.g. the city or council, and copy it to us we assume the letter is available for publication by us unless you specifically state otherwise.
Articles, Obituaries, Photos and Other Requests/Comments
  • Articles are due by 6 p.m. Tuesday but stand a better chance of publication if submitted earlier in the weekly cycle.
  • Story/article submissions: Our preferred method of submission is as file attachments to email in MSWord, double-spaced is helpful.  Simply typing the material into the email itself may lead to difficulties in importing it.  We also accept hard copy submissions at the office during office hours or via the mail slots on the doors. If a story is a group product, please refrain from submission until you have a final version. Do not submit drafts.
  • Edits: Be aware that your text is not sacrosanct.  It will most likely be edited prior to publication – perhaps extensively.
  • Obituaries: We accept obituaries free of charge for individuals with a connection to the city and at the discretion of the editor.  We prefer that the text be under about 500 words in length.  A photograph may also be provided for consideration.
  • Photos: Submissions should be of resolution preferably greater than 1 Mb.  In transferring  photos from a cellphone or other device, be aware that texting or emailing them may reduce their resolution unless high resolution is specifically requested.  Identify the photographer and, unless the photo is of a crowd scene, the individuals in the photograph – captions can also be submitted.  Attach the photo to the email rather than copying it into the body of the email.  If children are included, please ensure you have parental permission to submit the photograph.
  • Questions or Comments:  Out of office hours, please send an email (preferable) or leave a phone message.  These will be read in our next office session (Monday and Tuesday, 2 to 4 p.m.). Note that unless stated otherwise, communications and submissions to the newspaper become material we can elect to publish at our discretion.
  • Delivery: Materials for the newspaper may be put through the mail slot in the external door.  The door is located about 40′ to the left of the door to the Community Center at the end of the building nearest Roosevelt Center.  It is up a few steps and on the right.  There is a small sign on the door.
