At its March 12 regular meeting, city council voted to authorize engaging the services of a firm to conduct a national search for the city’s next chief of police. Chief James Craze retired in October 2016 with 45 years of service to the city and more than 50 in law enforcement. At that time, former City Manager Michael McLaughlin appointed Deputy Chief Thomas Kemp as interim chief of police, who himself has served more than 30 years in the Greenbelt Police Department.
Up to $30,000 was budgeted for the search. In December 2017 the city advertised a Request for Qualifications for police chief recruitment services and three firms responded, with estimates in the $22,000 to $30,000 range. The city manager, assistant city manager and director of human resources reviewed the responses and selected Springsted Waters Executive Recruitment firm of St. Paul, Minn., as their first choice.
