The Greenbelt Recreation Arts Program invites the community to celebrate Greenbelt’s 87th anniversary with an Artful Afternoon at the Community Center. On Sunday, June 2 from 1 to 3 p.m., art makers of all ages are invited to join Greenbelt Recreation Arts instructor Racquel Keller for a painting party on the front lawn. All experience levels are welcome. Participants can bring their favorite art supplies or use materials provided at the workshop to create fun, colorful artwork. Bring a picnic lunch and eat on the lawn. Sign up online (bit.ly/3R1hxbF) to reserve a spot for June 2. This activity will also be offered on Sunday, June 9 at Springhill Lake Recreation Center, located at 6101 Cherrywood Lane; register at bit.ly/3UH0hsY for this session.

Artists and picnickers gathering on the Community Center lawn on June 2 will be serenaded between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. by Greenbelt Recreation instructor Rachel Ann Cross and her ukulele students. At 3 p.m., the Greenbelt Concert Band will perform in the Community Center gymnasium. Their performance will be followed by a 4 p.m. program by the Greenbelt Community Orchestra. The combined concert is free and requires no tickets or reservations. In the second half, members of both ensembles will join forces to perform Aaron Copland’s locally famous suite composed for the City of Greenbelt as part of his score for the 1939 film, The City.

Artful Afternoon activities will follow a U.S. naturalization ceremony in the Community Center gym at noon. Additional activities include a free open house at the nearby Greenbelt Museum from 1 to 5 p.m. For additional program information, visit greenbeltmd.gov/arts.
