What are your hopes for the future? What are you going to do to improve yourself? Your community? The world? These pertinent questions comprise the survey for Message to Tomorrow, a new program created by Chris Cherry, performing arts program director for the City of Greenbelt, and sponsored by the Recreation Department.
It was conceived in honor of Greenbelt’s 80th Anniversary and its history of “civic activism and forward-thinking leadership that characterized Greenbelt from the beginning,” says Cherry. Participants place the completed surveys in a designated box in the Community Center lobby during the month of June. In effect, participants “are invited to write themselves a letter, outlining their hopes for the future and the actions they commit to taking to improve their community and the world.” On June 1, 2018 the surveys will be mailed back to the writers for them to assess their progress in their respective goals. Hard copies of the survey and their stamped envelopes can be found at the Community Center.
Cherry cites the initial and driving spirit of Greenbelt as his main inspiration. He draws on the founding vision of Greenbelt as a city of tomorrow that was built to promote a new way of living. This celebration is a way of looking toward the future by aiming to improve the present.
