Greenbelt was named Greenbelt was named the 2023 Sustainability Champion by Sustainable Maryland for amassing more points than any other municipality.

The Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland announced that the City of Greenbelt was one of 16 Maryland municipalities honored at the Sustainable Maryland Awards Ceremony at the Maryland Municipal League’s annual fall conference in mid-October. Greenbelt was named the 2023 Sustainability Champion in the program for amassing more points than any other municipality and was certified at the Silver level.

Highlights of Greenbelt’s accomplishments include:

The Greenbelt MakerSpace, located in the Granite Building, created a repair café that teaches residents how to repair things like common household appliances, jewelry, furniture and clothing. The MakerSpace has also created a tool lending library that allows residents to access tools without purchasing them.

Greenbelt’s Community Solar Program has continued to expand and now has 130 households enrolled. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, this is equivalent to 812 metric tons of carbon dioxide avoided.

“The City of Greenbelt takes pride in being socially and environmentally responsible,” said Mayor Emmett Jordan. “From recycling to composting, bike paths and the overhead tree canopies and our soon-to-be enacted single-use plastic bag ban, the city continually works to take responsibility for a more sustainable future.”
