The Greenbelt Recreation Arts Program invites families and children of all ages to a joyful celebration of creative transformation in Roosevelt Center. Formerly known as the Halloween Costume Contest and Parade, the event returns this year as the Wild Rumpus on Friday, October 28. Arrive at 4:15 p.m. at the Centerway underpass.
Guests are invited to show off their Halloween or cosplay costumes. Greenbelt Recreation requests no gore or violent imagery, to create a peaceful and welcoming space for all participants.
This event draws inspiration from the classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are. Keep an eye out for Max, sovereign of the Wild Things, in her white wolf suit. If she is especially impressed by people’s costume artistry or spirited dance moves, she may invite them to be knighted! If summoned, kneel politely for the tapping ceremony.
Trick-or-treat around the Center with the Greenbelt City Council, local merchants and nonprofit organizations. Participants will include the Greenbelt Library, Greenbelt Arts Center, Greenbelt Co-op Supermarket, Cedars of Lebanon, Realty 1, Greenbelt Federal Credit Union, Generous Joe’s, Mini Mart, Greenbelt Sunoco, Greenbelt Auto and Truck, Solar Nail, Beijing, Choice Clinical Services and additional Granite Building tenants.
The trick-or-treat route ends back at the central plaza, where guests can enjoy free spooky short films at the Old Greenbelt Theatre. The screening will begin when the first wave of trick-or-treaters arrives, and revelers can enter or exit anytime.
Those using GPS to locate the event may wish to input 161 Centerway, Greenbelt, Maryland, which is the Greenbelt Sunoco Station. Centerway itself will be closed to vehicle traffic, but drivers can enter the parking lot by the Co-op Supermarket.
In case of heavy rain, this event will be rescheduled for Monday, October 31, at the same time and location. For recorded program status information, call 301-474-0646.
