Bertha Anne Gaymon is the new city treasurer. Gaymon brings to this position over 20 years of experience directing and managing the business and fiscal affairs of government and non-profit organizations.
The city treasurer serves as the director of finance and is responsible for the administration of the financial affairs of the city. This includes business and financial planning such as budget development, debt management, accounting revenue collection, vendor payments and payroll.
Gaymon earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix. She joined the Downtown Business Improvement District Corporation in 1997 as the finance and administration director responsible for a full range of financial, human resources and administrative activities. Over the years, she has been instrumental in keeping that organization’s budget in balance and increasing its assessment collection rate.
“I had the good fortune of starting in a beginner’s role and through hard work, determination and perseverance moving to leading roles, so I will encourage my team to do the same – not just within various levels of the finance arena but cross-functionally as well,” stated Gaymon.
Gaymon has extensive experience in bank negotiations and relations, inventory control systems and directing and managing the business and fiscal affairs of government and nonprofit organizations. Before joining the Business Improvement District Corporation, she served as the director of finance and administration for the Finance Project, a specialized non-profit firm that caters to public and private sector leaders, and was the corporate director of the National Commission on Children, a bipartisan entity chaired by former Senator John D. Rockefeller IV of West Virginia. She also has served in various positions in the Prince George’s County government and the State of Maryland.
City Manager Nicole Ard stated, “I am thrilled that Bertha Gaymon is joining the City of Greenbelt. Ms. Gaymon is an energetic, seasoned CFO including over 20 years of service alone to an innovative, nonprofit serving diverse residents, cultural institutions and businesses. Her familiarity with financial operations of trash and recycling, infrastructure, homeless services, workforce development, the arts, public and open space, security, economic development, as well as with collective bargaining, will serve Greenbelt well. Gaymon is also familiar with Greenbelt through community service at Doctors Hospital.”
Her many accomplishments with the Downtown Business Improvement District Corporation include: increasing staff retention by 15 percent within two years, increasing revenue collection rate from 87 to 98 percent of a $12 million budget, enhancement of the procurement system to significantly reduce turnaround times and earning an “unqualified audit opinion,” the cleanest rating audit ranking for the past 22 years for multiple corporations.
